Temporarily Out of Order

Due to some server side changes, binarytoybox.com will not be seeing any new posts throughout the weekend. Apologies to all for the interruption. In the meantime, go check out some more strongbad emails, my scrigidies.

Thanksgiving

Well, another Thanksgiving has come and is nearly gone. Here in New England, as in most of the Northeastern US, we received a good deal of snow on Wednesday. I like to look at snow, but I hate shoveling. Man, what a pain in the ass. I'm out there sliding around the driveway, shoveling away, and I go to toss this one big shovel full of slush, ice, and wet snow and the handle pops right off my shovel and it goes skittering into the yard. It was cold as hell, the wind was blowing, yeah... Shoveling sucks.

In other news, the Patriots played today and won. It was definitley some sloppy football. Lots of penalties, too many unfinished scoring opportunities. I mean really, a field goal to cap their first drive? Bullshit. However, a win is a win, and at least our kicker didn't have his nose splashed across his face. Beating the Lions isn't the same as beating the Packers or the 49ers, though, and until we get a few good teams smacked down into our win column, I'm going to continue to be a little worried about our post-season potential.

Overall it was a good day: I saw my family, everyone was safe and accounted for, and we ate turkey and watched football. Compared to today's happenings in the Middle East, we lucked out, and we have a lot to be thankful for.

She did what?

reservocation: Briefing for a Descent into Heck
A thoughtful essay about receiving compensation for your writing on the independent web. I think about sites like littlegreenfootballs that provide a service to the community: current news about an important topic and a place to discuss it. That to me is something worth paying a few bucks for. Then I think about my site and others like it, and no matter how much I enjoy them, they don't provide enough of a service to be worth much. Fresh links? Sometimes. Well-written prose? Once in a while. Basically it comes down to this: the amount of work you put in is directly proportional to what you get out of it. If like Mark, you're constantly writing software and giving it away or publishing great little essays about new technology, you're probably worth something. If on the other hand your blog is a glorified personal journal, you'll probably get nothing.

Now, to prove me wrong, there are sites that are nothing more than diary sites that make small amounts of money. They ask for donations, a few dollars, and people give it to them. It's my opinion that you can only do this in the blogosphere. Picture going out with a few of your friends, ranting about some television show you watched the other day, and then asking everyone to give you a few bucks for it. Yeah right.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to make a few bucks just like the next person, but you only really deserve it if you earn it. Good luck and best wishes, fellow blogarians.

Hacktivismo

Hacktivismo
Interesting software license. The following section really got my attention:

14.2 Any Governmental Entity that uses, copies, changes, modifies, or distributes, the Software or any part or portion thereof, or any Governmental Person who does so (whether that person's Governmental Entity contends the person's action was, or was not, authorized or official), permanently and irrevocably waives any defense based on sovereign immunity, official immunity, the Act of State Doctrine, or any other form of immunity, that might otherwise apply as a defense to, or a bar against, any legal action based on the terms of this License Agreement.

So where does that fit in to the Homeland Security Package?

Holiday slowdown

I've noticed that as the holidays approach and real life becomes more hectic, readership has been down a little. Now this probably isn't the case for cool people like Zelman and Mark, but for little old me I have to go with the flow. Because of this, I've been spending a little more time with my little digital camera and I've been trying to come up with some posts worth reading. We'll see how it goes.

A note: Are you using Movable Type's bookmarklet? Are you having trouble posting about Mark's site? If you're using a gecko based browser, the MT Bookmarklet fix is here. Thanks Phil.

Found via Zeldman, this site looks pretty neat. Stories that have been overheard, illustrated. Worthy of more exploration.

Changing their focus

Forbes.com: AMD to move beyond PC, faster chips no longer key
Interesting decision to make. Have we finally reached the point where the speed of the processor is secondary to what you can do with it? I don't think so as nice as that would be. However, this could be a great thing for AMD if they do it right. Think about it: the processors and manufacturing processes they use aren't exactly ass, they are right behind Intel in the processor race. What if they started tailoring their devices for certain uses? Start placing full processors in digital video cameras and allowing for more control and manipulation right at the image capturing stages? What if they added their processors to VCR's and stereos for added functionality and ease of use? This could be a really interesting developement in the hardware industry.

Consumerism and guilt

CNN.com - New Mortal Kombat bloodier than ever
I asked for a Game Cube for Christmas in expectation of the new Zelda game to be released next year, as well as being able to play the new Metroid. This Mortal Kombat title also looks like it could be fun. As games get better and computing power increases, there's the potential for some extremely neat things to be created. For instance: according to the above linked CNN article, this game keeps track of injuries and makes them continue to bleed. It also let players leave tracks when they step in blood. Gruesome? Maybe. Realistic? Much more than the disapearing blood found in earlier versions. Thing of games like Quake: what if after you were shot you dripped blood and the AI used it to track you? Now that would be hardcore.

PGP encryption and comment systems

onfocus.com : free to the public
One of the things I've been meaning to do: look into pgp encryption. I've always thought about it mostly for email, and when I make my credit card payments online (because if there's a better place for encryption than when you move money from your checking acount to your credit card company, I can't think of one). I never thought about using it in a commenting system, however it makes a lot of sense. When you think of it like that, why isn't it worked into instant messenging, bulletin boards, etc? This is a good way to keep spammers out of your stuff too. Not authenticating yourself? I don't want your email then. I know it's kind of like whitelisting in a way, and there's a barrier for non-technical users, but it's definitely a topic that warrants discussion in my opinion.

Interesting idea...

Slashdot | Software For Ransom
This is an interesting idea. I wasn't able to read anything in-depth because the stupid pages were all slashdotted.

In any case, I think with short time spans and reasonable amounts of money, this could work well. One problem I couls forsee is a small group of users constantly paying for the entire group's usage, however it would be those people who would be most likely to use the application and it's source code to the fullest.

Custom error pages

Mark's been doing a lot of work on his site lately, and one of the things he did was create a custom error page that allows people to use shortcuts in the url bar to access his content. He based this on the functionality of the PHP site, which allows you to search for the documentation of a function by appending it to the url. A while ago, I saw Razmus Lerdorf give a presentation about how they accomplished this on the php site. You can see his slides here. The part about the error pages starts around slide 44.

Square fruit? Yup.

Sometimes it would be better if people just leave things along. Sometimes, it's funnier when they don't. And the stupid Japanese people can't appreciate them. I mean, hey buddy: come sell those square things in America. We'll cut the tops off an turn them into vodka drinks for two, sell them at bars for $100 a piece and make a mint. Hell, maybe I'll just buy some glass cubes and grow my own. It's not like he can patent square fruit or anything. I'll make little square kiwis and sell them too... This reminds me of that cat in the jar thing... I wish I could find that... It was fricken hysterical... Cats in a jar... ha ha ha...

Update: Scott found the link! He rules! Yeah Bonzai Kitten!

Yup. I'm honestly jealous.

With this, Mark has quite honestly become the coolest person in my world. What a neat thing to think of, and then to just go and do it. I sit for good portions of my day trying to think up cool things to do, and I never come up with anything except stuff like this.

You may not be a geek, and you may not understand half the things Mark writes about, but you'll definitely like the stuff he does. Go find out who you should be reading, then come tell me if you like it or not.

Do your job as an American

As American's, we all have jobs to do to ensure our freedom and our rights. Read Dave's post below, and then do your job by filling out the form and having it sent to your congressperson. In a world where P. Diddy wants to be President, we all need to take a stand at some point. What's that quote about knife raping nuns?

We've got all these fun things floating around that do their best to circumvent the Constitution. My biggest problem is the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). This is the one that says you aren't allowed to make a copy of a CD or tape you bought. That means all those mixed tapes you made are illegal and you're a dirty thief susceptible to a federal trial. You horrible, awful person! The DMCA ranks right up there with the Patriot Act on my list of stupid legislature. Now, it says alot more about encryption and not trying to break encryption. But the only people this protects is big business. So it's not just about mixed tapes and stuff like that. read more about it, you won't regret it.

Right now the Electronic Freedom Foundation is lobbying and asking for your support in amending the DMCA as well as supporting the introduction of a bill called the Digital Media Consumer Rights Act (DMCRA). All you have to do is contact your appropriate legislator and ask them to vote for this bill. They've made it so easy. You don' even need stamps. you can go to the EFF website and they will send a fax for you. So please go and fill out the form. There's no cost to do this. There's much more cost if you don't.

Go here to fill out the form. Your voice can make a difference.

At least he's got good taste in music...

tonypierce.com busblog
So Tony Pierce is a Raider's fan, and like all the other Raiders fans, he wanted the Pats to lose on Sunday. And they did. I can't say I'm suprised, but I can say I wish it had turned out differently. The Pats played horribly for the first half, and then started to look a little better towards the end, bringing themselves within a touchdown. If there were only a few more minutes in that game.

I can make excuses all day: third road game, more injuries this year, putting the gloves on too late. The bottom line is we lost. Even lower than that bottom line, though, is that we won the Super Bowl last year. Pierce seems to think that the Patriots got to the Super Bowl but didn't deserve it. I think that's completely wrong. If the Raiders were so good last year, the snow bowl wouldn't have been close enough for a call (and I don't think a call made by using the rule book is bad) to change the game either way. I also think that the Patriots defeated the Steelers pretty solidly, and then the Rams pretty solidly. They may have got a break against the Raiders, but they beat the Steelers and the "greatest show on turf" solidly and fairly, just like the Raiders beat them on Sunday night.

In any case, even though I think Pierce is a little off on his opinion about the snow bowl last year (and as an obssesed fan, I can understand his devotion to his team and his belief that they were robbed, I mean why haven't the Sox won a World Series? Someone's been rigging our seasons...) I think he's got good taste in music. I too am enjoying Jay-Z's new CD's.

I picked them up last Wednesday, having to go to three stores before I found one that wasn't sold out. I brought it home and listened to a few of the tracks. Lots of different sounds, lots of things to explore. That's one of the things I love most about a new CD. You never know what that next track will sound like. Is the radio edit the same as the CD edit? Is that guest artist on track nine going to sound better than they do on their own shitty CD? You never know, and every new song is new territory for you to explore.

When I get a new CD, I usually listen to it once as background music, then again with headphones so I can actually listen to it. The more I've listened to these two discs, in my car, in my cube, on my stereo in my room, the more I've come to enjoy them. I'm not sure if this album is better than the Blueprint 1, or the unplugged CD (so far I like that one the best), but I recommend it if you're a Jay-z fan. It won't disappoint.

I've been reading Mena's site for a while now, almost as long as I've been running Movable Type. I think her site is pretty interesting, in that she's a pretty normal person aside from the fact that she and her husband, Mena and Ben, have created an application that is facilitiating communication across the web, has (behind blogger, as a step up from blogger, and as inspiration to others who write similar [and by that I mean content management systems] programs) stirred up a pretty big movement on the web. Aside from the fact that in my world she borders on a genius, she's a pretty normal woman, and funny too.

Anyway, this week she writes about a friend of hers who is trying to have a baby, and in doing so touches on some of her concerns about having children. At the same time that I was sad for her friend, I was quite amused by her stories, one of which involves covering kids in poop. You should check it out, it's pretty funny.

Bleh...

I've managed to survive another rainy weekend. Tomorrow is suppoed to be cloudy, but dry, something that although not great is better. I normally don't mind the rain, however I've learned to hate it during the week because of the commute and on weekends because it's the only time I'm not at work and it's not dark outside. I understand this summer was rough and we had a drought and all, but come one: do we need to make up an entire year of below average rain in one month? I personally don't think so.

Anyway, it was a slow weekend as fas as things to write about and I don't have anything stored up worth going into. Usually, I file away a few interesting ideas or links so that on days like today I'm not just babbling along. Oh well.

And by the way: Go Pats, Go Pats, Go Go Go... Or something like that.

Interesting idea, but will people pay for it? As a matter of fact, I wonder what the ratio of paying MT users to non-paying MT users is. Not that Mena and Ben (Mena, I'm trying to help you out here) don't deserve to get paid, and I'm saving my change so I can cash it in and make my donation, but I would guess that most people use it for free. It's an interesting topic: at what level of adoption can you take a free product like MT and change it to a licensed product? Can you even do it? Or can you only get away with making any new features cost? I don't know what the answer is.

This is scary stuff. How do you tell if it's true? How do you stop it if it is? Read it, then think about it. Dave's in Pittsburgh, I'm in Boston, I have friends near DC. Ok, ok, ok. So I'm walking through Wal*Mart, looking at all the messed up people like I always do, and I come right around the corner almost slamming into an extremely wide child. He's wearing a t-shirt with one of those silkscreen one liners on it. Know what it said?

Now if you can't find the humor in that, you're just plain old humorless. Or something.

In other news, I bought my first car stereo today. Up until now, all my cars have still had their factory systems in them, all with varying degrees of quality. Currently, though, my car has one working speaker, the back driver's side. Let me tell you: when you spend two hours a say in a car, you need more than one speaker. You need it like you need kidneys. It's mandatory.

For clarification, let me say I bought half a car stereo. One head unit and a pair of 6.5 inch speakers. For now, I'll put them in the rear, hopefully moving them to the front at some point and putting in some bigger speakers in the back at some point so I have a little more low end. Don't get me wrong, I'm the only one that listens to my car stereo, I don't like to share with the people next to me. However, I do like to have a really nice, full, rich sound, so for me having the 3 voice speakers up front and something a little heavier in the back should do the job. That also means I have about $125 still to spend once I buy the speakers and have them installed (you don't think I'm going to cut holes in the rear deck of a car I don't even really own, do you? pshhh, no). Spending money is such a bitter-sweet thing to do... I mean part of me screams no, and part of me can;t wait to have another 125 to buy the rest of the stereo. I feel like shit for spending anything. Man I suck.

Finally, below you'll find some pics from my new little camera. These were taken today looking out my cube window. The little camera adjusts the light, making it look like a beautiful day when it was truthfully a little cloudy, and never that sunny looking. If you look in the bottom right of the pics, you'll see one of the depressing bent trees. Also, these pics are looking more to the left from my window. Looking straight out, all you see is another building, so I tried to make it a little more interesting. Oh well.

So the Patriots won this weekend, blowing out the Bils. I can't honestly say that it was an easy game for me to watch. I wanted Drew to win. I wanted Tom to win. I cheered for the Bills and booed the Pats. I cheered for the Pats and booed the Bills. It was a tough game.

In any case, the guys on the radio were giving picks for the games this weekend and I thought to my self, "Self, why don't you do that on your site?" So here's the deal: In the comments post your picks for all the games this weekend. If I get more than ten people to post picks, the person with the most picks will win a prize. I'm currently thinking a DVD or a CD, but I'll figure it out after I see whether or not enough people will post.

I guess that makes it kind of a trade off, huh? Tell your friends to play so that there's actually a prize, but don't tell too many so that you have a chance to win.

And by the way, include a pick for the Monday night game as well as the total score of the game (team one's score plus team two's score). I'll use the closest without going over as a tie-breaker.

You'll find my picks in the comments below. No spread. Just winners and losers.

Day three

I was going to bring my camera with me today for fun T shots, but I ended up not doing it. Why? Because there was a stupid north easter here which meant rain and darkness. That litte camera of mine will not take pictures in poor lighting, meaning that I wouldn't have been able to get anything today anyway. Sorry, scrigidies.

Meanwhile, Dave has suggested some flash movies in the comments (use the sidebar to get there), but I haven't had a chance to view them. Maybe you should and then you can tell me what they're about and if they're worth watching.

I know you all miss me, and I miss you. I have many stories to tell you, and I'm trying to finish up all my other loos ends so I can spend some time here... I'm in the middle of a re-design as well. Damn I have too much to do.

In the meantime, amuse yourself with this thought: that new car I bought? The one that shouldn't leak since every other car I've owned has leaked? It leaks. Right on my head.

Day two

Day two was much better than day one. However, I'm quite tired tonight. It's going to take a few more days of commuting to get used to this. Nothing interesting happened on the T today, so I have no wonderful stories for you. Tomorrow, though, I plan on bringing my camera so I can bring back some pictures for you, my scrigidies. Until then, keep on scrollin or something.

And by the way...

I think I already got most of you, but to those of you that I missed (for example, Dawn, thank you for your congratulations on the new job. I appreciate it, and all of you. Thanks again.

Some days, you just can't win...

I got up for work early today, got dressed, got ready, and prepared to leave. I didn't sleep well last night due to pre-first day jitters. Not true nervousness, just that "I don't want to wake up late and look like an ass on my first day" kind of thing.

I left a little after six and started driving towards Boston. Two lanes of traffic moving at 80 miles per hour or faster with no where to go if that's too fast for you. In my new car, I ran over half of someone's muffler. At approximately 75 miles per hour. No damage done, but not the best way to start the day.

I got to the T station (the subway, for non-Bostonites), purchased my tokens and waited for the train to arrive. It did, but not before I was freezing my ass off. I got on and rode into the city. Arriving at the Park Street stop, I got off and switched to the Green line, missing the first train out of fear that it was the wrong one and I would end up somewhere bad (read HELL). It was ok though. I didn't need to be at work until 9 and it was currently a little before 8. All was good with the world.

I walked towards the building keeping my eyes open for a Dunkin Donuts. No luck there, but there's a Starbucks kitty corner to my office building (what the hell kind of phrase is kitty corner anyway? should it be kitty korner? how about citty-corner? geesh). I went in and marveled at the menu. Truth be told, I'd never been in a Starbucks before, and enjoying my coffee cold (as in iced), I didn't really see too much that was getting me excited. I opted for the hot chocolate and headed down to the bottom floor so I could drink it and read the free newspaper I had been given in the T station.

At 8:45 I went over to my building, went in, found my manager and began the day. Lots of proprietary systems that are very confusing to a new comer, and I began to feel more and more depressed as the day wore on. I eventually got to go grab some lunch and I returned to my desk. As luck would have it, my cube (yes, I now am a card carrying member of cube-land) has a window that allows me to look down on the people six floors below. It's actually really depressing. The wind blows down the street so hard that the little sidewalk trees are permanently bent in one direction, all their branches pointing in the direction of least resistance. The people hustle and bustle back and forth, occasionally diving out of the way of a crazy taxi driver. Very few people travel with a companion, most are alone. Grey concrete, lonely people, twisted trees, it almost makes you want to jump.

I finally left work around three because I didn't have a computer to work on and therefore couldn't work. I walked back to the train station, waited for the correct train, and boarded.

Now here's where the story starts to get interesting, as I knew it would when I passed the tuba player who was trying to get people to drop money in his case. His tuba really did sound nice in the big hollow arteries of Boston, but come on: a tuba? Did he have to buy extra tokens to get it down there?

So I'm thinking about the tuba player as I stand on the train, holding the bar, riding along. There are people in the seats on the left and right side of the train and an old man sleeping down near the end. I'm riding along. Riding. Riding. Riding. I look over, and I notice the front of the sleeping man's pants are wet, and getting wetter. He begins to cough, hacking up some wet and chunky lung pieces, covers his lap with his bag, and tries to feign sleep. Meanwhile, he has filled his seat with piss. As we rounded the next curve, it poured onto the floor, splashing and forming little rivers in every direction. As I try not to laugh at the idiocy of it all, I notice a construction worker dancing on his tip toes trying to avoid the tricky urine that was attempting to entrap him. He looks at me disgusted and I look back, shrugging my shoulders and giving him the "What the fuck?" stare. At the next stop he got off.

So I rode on, exchanging looks with the other passengers. Eventually Mr. Pissy Pants got off, the man across from him lifted his satchel (which had been on the floor) and placed it in his lap, only to realize it too had piss on it, and then he started muttering about how *great* it was after we informed him he was now covered in piss. The longer I thought about it, the harder it was not to laugh.

My stop finally came, and I got off. Who should come up behind me? Mr. Construction worker. "That was gross. I had to switch cars," he said. "That shit ain't right," I replied.

I drove home without much incident. Since I was home early, I figured I'd go get a haircut. The girl faded my hair, took the guard off, straightened a line, and then proceeded to buzz right up the back of my head. Realizing what she had done, she let loose this little yelp and said "No charge... I just buzzed your head." I asked to see it, and sure enough she buzzed my head. I told her not to worry, it was only hair, but told her I was glad she wasn't charging me. She did her best to make it look normal, but it's not. It'll make a great impression on my second day of work. Really, though... At least I didn't piss myself on the T, right?

Well well well...

So it's been an interesting weekend. Got my new camera, which isn't what I had hoped for, but you get what you pay for. Also got my new car, which is about what I expected, minus an acceptable stereo. Needless to say, I've been listening to speakers and head units everywhere I go in search of a replacement. I didn't realize that there is some really nice sounding equipment out there for some pretty decent prices. I should be able to have something that sounds pretty good for about $250, which isn't too bad.

I had my first post to pottymouth that contained a racial slur. Feel free to leave comments about what a hypocrite I am for deleting it. I can take it.

In other news, I start my new job tomorrow. Assuming that I live through the commute, I'll let you all know how it goes.

Finally, I recently installed openBB, a forum software package. It's very complex and klunky. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other packages that are a little easier to use and more streamlined. The package I'm using is free, so I won't complain if there aren't any alternative, but if there are, I'd like to know.

Hope you all had a good weekend.

So tired...

I fixed some of my categories, the links to which you can find on the left. I also fixed the display of pottymouth so that it's not so tough to read. I wish I could do more around here, but until I establish a more regular schedule with less errands and crap, it's going to have to be this way.

In the meantime, check out Strong Bad. Let me know which episodes you think are funniest. Right now my favorite is Butt IQ, because your butt is at least as stupid as your head, if not stupider.
