So I read somewhere, maybe on slashdot that computers would soon become obsolete as gaming platforms due to the fact that gaming consoles are getting better and better. After viewing the demo for Madden 2003 on the X Box and Playstation 2, I would have to agree. I mean seriously: any game that needs a whole fucking keyboard as well as a mouse and a joystick in order to play has been designed by Satan himself in order to spread carple tunnel like the bubonic plague.
A few weeka ago at a different email address I got a message from Blizzard. Stupid me, I didn't read it right away. Blizzard has begun designing a new console game. Stunning? Not merely because it's by Blizzard for a console, since they re-released other titles on various gaming systems. However, all of their games have been released for computer first. Blizzard is an incredible company, releasing games infrequently, but when they do, look out. I may be wrong, but I think every game they've released has been given some award during its first year (usually best game, duh) and sells a buh-zillion copies. Blizzard, in short, rules. If they think the PC is dead as a gaming platform, and they must have some doubts based on their development strategy for Ghost, it very well may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Now if the next version of Quake is PS2 only, it's definitely all done.
Console games don't push designers forward. They have a set of standards to work with and that's all. That's what you get with an embedded system and not a full blown program. PC games will always look better because they can use the newest tech and not have to rely on some 3 year old GPU that's soldered onto the board of a console.
Add-ons are another big issue with console games. There aren't any. You can't change the game at a low level. This would make games like counterstrike, bid for power, and many others impossible. These were made by fans. Closed systems don't allow this.
I prefer the keyboard mouse combo over a controller anyday. You can't fine tune your aiming skills with a controller. There is NO pixel precision at all. Also, given the complexity of games nowadays, the use of a menu system has become necessary on consoles because of the dozens of commands. Moving to a menu leaves you open for attack. I'd rather bind commands to a key than have to deal with a floating menu thats obstructing my view.
If you couldn't tell, I'm an avid PC gamer. Don't get me wrong, I like the consoles, but not for certain types of games. Racing games for example, side scrollers, etc... But thats the reason I bought a controller for my PC. ;) FPS and RTS games will be ruled by the PC for a LONG time.
This game looks fucking cool.
how much do u get payed to work 4 blizzard and how old do u have be to get hiered??
Steven,
I don't work for Blizzard. In order to get a job there you need to have a good understanding of programming languages such as C++, as well as skills in graphic design, 3d design, etc.
You can get more information if you go to blizzard's website at www.blizzard.com. However, might I suggest that you first learn how to spell. I've heard that's a precursor to any good job.
Good luck.
Jason
